About Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are among the smallest birds in the world, with most species measuring between 3-5 inches in length. Despite their tiny size, they are remarkable creatures known for their ability to hover in mid-air, fly backwards, and beat their wings at an astonishing rate of 50-80 times per second.

These jewel-like birds are found exclusively in the Americas, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, with the greatest diversity occurring in the tropical regions of South and Central America.

Amazing Facts

  • A hummingbird's heart rate can reach up to 1,260 beats per minute
  • They can fly at speeds exceeding 30 miles per hour
  • Some species migrate over 500 miles non-stop across the Gulf of Mexico
  • A hummingbird's brain makes up 4.2% of its body weight - proportionally larger than humans
